What are Director’s Chairs?

Director’s chairs are lightweight folding chairs commonly used in the film industry. They were originally designed for film directors to use on sets, hence the name. These lightweight chairs are folded side-to-side with a scissors action. These are versatile and highly portable pieces of decorative furniture.

Director’s chairs are typically made of a simple wooden or metal frame with a canvas or fabric seat and backrest. They are known for their distinctive design, featuring a tall backrest.

Director’s chairs are popular not only in the film industry but also in various other settings like trade shows, advertising, brand promotion, makeup studios, outdoor events, and even in homes as occasional seating. They are easily customisable, allowing for the addition of personalised text or logos on the backrest.

Originally director’s chairs were used to provide a portable and lightweight seating option for directors or other individuals who are supervising or overseeing a production, event, or activity.  They are ideal for trade shows as they are designed to be easy to set up and dismantle, allowing them to be conveniently transported and used in various locations.

The popularity of these custom-branded furniture is also attributed to the fact that they are so portable and comfortable that they can be used for promotion, travelling, outdoor and indoor functions.

The benefits of canvas fabric in directors’ chairs include:

1. Durability: Polyester canvas fabric is known for its sturdiness and ability to withstand wear and tear. It can handle heavy use and is less likely to rip or tear compared to other materials.

2. Breathability: It is breathable, allowing air to flow through and preventing the user from getting too hot or sweaty while sitting for long periods.

3. Easy maintenance: Poly Canvas can be easily cleaned with simple soap and water. It is also resistant to stains and can be spot-cleaned when necessary.

4. Comfort: The fabric for these seats offer a level of comfort due to their flexibility and slight give when seated. The fabric also provides some cushioning without the need for extra

Customised Director’s Chairs

Director chairs with logos are a popular tool in the world of advertising. They not only provide comfort for guests, but they also play a crucial role in conveying professionalism and authority. One of the main advantages of these furnitures is their portability. As advertising and activations often take place in various locations, having a seat that is lightweight and easy to transport is invaluable. Directors Chairs with company logos are used in all types of applications like brand activations, trade shows, showrooms, outdoor events, race events and even restaurants and bars. They are both functional and effective in reinforcing the brand or company.

How we customise our Director’s Chairs

At Focus, we offer two options for printing based on quantity and use.

We primarily use digital printing via dye sublimation to create our branded director’s chair. The backrests can be printed on both sides and can even convey a different message front and back. The range of colours and ability to print any image is a massive advantage with digital printing, as is the price. The seat fabric can also be customised.

We use polyester canvas which is a sturdy, water-resistant, and low-maintenance synthetic fabric. We recommend storing these chairs properly after use and not leaving them exposed to the elements for extended periods. We use two pieces of fabric for both the backrest and seat which creates a very strong seat.

The disadvantage of digital printed director chairs is that they have a limited lifespan when exposed to the UV. They can’t be left out in the elements for days on end, as with most fabrics they will fade.

Longlife branded director’s chairs utilise screenprinting on solution-dyed fabrics designed especially for outdoor applications. Screen printing is a very durable printing method designed to last around 5 years. Of course, this method should also be paired with hardwood furniture-grade frames.

For our screen-printed fixtures, we generally use Sunbrella fabric which is a type of solution-dyed acrylic fabric that offers exceptional resistance against fading, stains, mould, mildew, and abrasion. In addition, it provides breathability and a soft texture to enhance comfort. This fabric is highly suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications due to its ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. Sunbrella fabric comes at a higher cost than other fabrics and demands special care and maintenance to ensure its long-lasting quality.

Custom options are more limited for screen-printed directors’ chairs and generally, we only do one or two colour logos.

How do you clean a fabric Director Chair?

To clean a fabric director’s chair, you can follow these steps:

1. Spot cleaning: Inspect the cover for any stains or spills. If you find any, treat them immediately with a mixture of mild detergent and warm water. Blot the stain gently with a clean cloth or sponge, working from the outside in to avoid spreading it further. Rinse the area with clean water and blot dry.

2. Deep clean: Fill a bucket or basin with warm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Mix it well to create soapy water. Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the soapy water, wring out excess moisture, and gently scrub the entire fabric surface of the seat fabric. Pay more attention to the areas that are visibly dirty or heavily soiled.

3. Rinse: After cleaning, rinse the cloth or sponge thoroughly and wipe the seat cover again to remove any soapy residue. Alternatively, you can use a new cloth or sponge dampened with clean water to wipe away any remaining soap.

4. Dry: Allow the seat cover to air dry completely, preferably outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Do not use a hairdryer or any heat source, as it may damage the fabric.

What wood are Directors Chairs made of?

Custom directors’ chairs are typically made of durable wood such as Eucalyptus or hardwood.

In modern director’s chairs, sustainable eucalyptus-based wood frames provide both durability and environmental friendliness. Other types of hardwood, such as bamboo or oak, may also be used depending on the desired aesthetic and quality of the furniture.

How to fit a Director Chair replacement cover?

To help you understand how to fit a director replacement cover, here is a general guide on how to do it:

1. Start by removing the old cover: If you are replacing an existing custom director chair cover, carefully remove it by sliding it off or unscrewing any fasteners holding it in place.

2. Prepare the new cover: Lay the new replacement cover flat on the ground and unfold or unroll it. If there are any straps or ties attached to the cover, untie or unfasten them.

3. Position the cover over the custom director’s chair: Lift the replacement cover and position it over the director. Ensure that it completely covers the frame and fits snugly.

4. Adjust and tighten: Once the cover is in place, make any necessary adjustments to ensure that it is aligned and centred properly.

5. Inspect and test: After fitting the replacement cover, visually inspect it to ensure that there are no wrinkles, loose areas, or gaps. Test the cover by gently tugging or shaking it to see if it holds tight and stays in place.

In conclusion, personalised director’s chairs serve as indispensable tools for creating a comfortable, portable, and visually appealing space, be it in a production or trade show. Their versatility, ability to personalise and reputation for being comfortable make them an excellent choice for businesses looking to make a lasting impression on their stakeholders. Whether it is to attract attention, foster creativity, or provide a comfortable seating solution, personalised directors’ chairs truly shine in their ability to enhance the overall ambience and effectiveness of any event.
